– OPEN SPACE
The definition of trompe l’oeil
is simple: push away space with the painting
so that it looks not painted but real.
Today this age old technique seduces again
and finds itself on furniture, decorative
pieces and even more so on walls of staircases,
dining areas of night clubs, boutiques,
home entry ways, restaurants and waiting
To open up space means creating faux windows,
make-belief niches, fictitious English
gardens, false lakes with ducks, sunflower
fields, provincial landscapes, blue skies
sprinkled with white clouds, and letting
monuments, fountains and faux marble pillars
rise up. Streets and mountains are emerging
from a house gable, whales and dolphins
from deep ocean floors.
Push away the walls, create new dimensions,
to escape on an illusory excursion.
